The 2009 Gewurztraminer completes this brilliant set of entry-level whites from Abbazia di Novacella. This is an impeccable, classy mid-weight Gewurztraminer loaded with character and personality. The 2008 Gewurztraminer flows from the glass in a generous expression of varietal fruit. Medium in body, the wine offers outstanding length in a moderately sweet style, with an elegant, caressing finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012. Abbazia di Novacella is an excellent source for wines from Alto Adige loaded with varietal character. The entry-level whites (in the Alsatian-style bottles) are aged in steel. The 2007 Gewurztraminer offers a beguiling combination of rich, varietal fruit but the vinification in steel preserves freshness and focus. Gorgeous aromatics lead to notes of passion fruit, lime peel, and spices as this generous, engaging wine opens up in the glass. As is often the case, the estate’s Gewurztraminer is one of the finest wines in this entry-level series. It is highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2009. Abbazia di Novacella is located in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful corners of Italy. The estate makes a wide range of wines across different levels of quality, as is the custom in these parts. The single-variety wines (in the Alsatian-style bottles) are aged in steel and made in a fresh style. The high-end Praepositus wines offer greater complexity and structure. The 2006 Gewurztraminer reveals expressive aromatics and lovely fruit on a fat, opulently textured frame, with notable persistence and follow through on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2008. Abbazia di Novacella is located in the Valle Isarco, the most northerly viticultural region in Italy. The estate is a great source for value-priced whites. The entry-level wines are aged in stainless steel and bottled with plastic corks so they are best consumed young. In particular, the wines made from indigenous varieties are well worth seeking out. These wines beautifully express the unique qualities of their respective varieties and the unique Valle Isarco terroir. The Praepositus range encompasses the top selections. Unfortunately I was only able to taste the Kerner from this group of whites. The red Praepositus wines have never been fully convincing.
