A full-bodied, opulent wine, the 2018 Lion's Tooth Chardonnay reveals hints of toasted hazelnuts on the nose, but the emphasis is squarely on the ripe peach and nectarine fruit, backed by zesty pineapple and citrus and hints of lees-derived custardy richness. Broad, mouthfilling and generous, it balances those characters with plenty of lip-smacking length on the finish. Delicious now, but built to age for at least 5-6 years, it's a noteworthy effort from this postage-stamp-sized estate.

The 2016 Lion's Tooth Chardonnay comes across as warmer and peachier-ripe than the Field of Fire bottling, with notes of peach and pineapple balanced by hints of crushed stone and pencilly oak. It's medium to full-bodied yet fresh and focused on the finish, where it picks up hints of aniseed.

Only just released, just 125 cases were made of the 2012 Lion's Tooth Chardonnay. The cooler year shows on the restrained, youthfully shy, citrus laced nose, revealing notes of grapefruit peel, slate and lovely earthiness with a faint waft of florals and nutmeg. Very taut, elegant and fresh in the mouth, it is a delicate wine of great tension and minerality finishing with long-lasting lemon pip and chalky notes.
